Naadan Crab Perattu is a delicious seafood of Kerala which is very popular in Kerala’s toddy shops. Nadan Njandu Perattu is a traditional Kerala-style crab dish that is known for its rich flavors and spicy taste. The masala typically includes ingredients like onions, tomatoes, ginger, garlic, and a variety of spices such as turmeric, red chili powder, coriander powder, garam masala and then slow-cooking them in a thick and flavorful masala.

The slow-cooking process allows the flavors to meld together, resulting in a delicious and succulent crab dish. Naadan Crab roast is often served as a main course with rice or roti and is a favorite among seafood lovers in Kerala.

Ingredients

  • Crab - 1 kg
  • Onion - 3 (sliced)
  • Ginger Garlic Green Chilli Paste - 2 tbsp
  • Tomato - 2 (sliced)
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Chilli Powder - 1 tsp
  • Fennel Powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander Powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Garam Masala Powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Pepper Powder - 1 tbsp
  • Salt - as needed
  • Curry Leaves
  • Coconut Oil

Instructions

  1. Heat coconut oil and add onion, ginger garlic green chilli paste, curry leaves. Saute until onion is cooked well. Add tomatoes and cook until it turns mushy.
  2. Add spice powders, salt and cook till raw smell fades. Add crab and mix well. Cover and cook the crab for 15 minutes, stirring it occasionally. Do not add water as the crab has its own moisture.
  3. Once the crab is cooked, remove lid and keep cooking until it is dry. Finally add little more pepper powder, mix and cook for 1 minute.
