Payyoli Chicken Fry | Chicken Coconut Fry Recipe

It is a popular dish in PAYYOLI, in the northern, Malabar side of Kerala. This spicy and yummy chicken fry is very popular in Payyoli. The grated coconut and coconut oil gives this dish a distinct flavor.

  • Chicken - 1 kg
  • Grated Coconut - 1/2 cup
  • Rice Powder - 2 tbsp
  • Salt
  • Red Chilli Powder - 1 tsp
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Curry Leaves
  • Coconut
  • Oil - to fry


  • Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Red Chilli Powder - 2 tsp
  • Coriander Powder - 1 tsp
  • Fennel Powder - 2 tsp
  • Pepper Powder - 1 tsp
  • Garam Masala Powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Salt
  • Corn Flour - 1 tbsp
  • Egg - 1


  1. Marinate chicken with the ingredients mentioned under "For Marination" and keep aside for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  2. In a bowl, mix grated coconut, rice flour, salt, chilli powder and turmeric powder together and keep aside.
  3. Heat coconut oil, deep fry chicken pieces until golden brown, remove from flame.
  4. Add coconut mix and curry leaves, fry for 2 minutes and strain the oil. Sprinkle over fried chicken pieces.
