Shepherd’s Pie

Shepherd’s Pie is a meat pie with a crispy crust of mashed potatoes. It is prepared with minced lamb or beef. It is sometimes layered with plenty of cheese in between or on the top. Shepherd’s Pie can be prepared with or without meat. It is commonly prepared with lamb. A yummy spicy delicious and easy to cook pie.

Ingredients

  • Potatoes - 6 (small, boiled)
  • Lamb - 1/2 kg (cooked and minced)
  • Lamb Stock - 1 cup
  • Onion - 1 (big, chopped)
  • Garlic - 2 cloves (chopped)
  • Tomato - 1 (chopped)
  • Carrot - 1 cup (chopped)
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Red Chilli Powder - 1 tsp
  • Pepper Powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Cumin Powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Fennel Powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander Powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Garam Masala Powder - 1 tsp
  • Parsley Leaves - little (chopped)
  • Salt
  • Butter - 5 tbsp
  • Cheddar Cheese - 1 cup (grated)
  • Mozzarella Cheese - 1 cup
  • Egg - 1 (yolk and white separated)
  • Milk - 3 tbsp

Instructions

  1. Take the boiled potatoes and mash it by adding butter (2tbsp), milk, egg yolk, salt and pepper while the potatoes are till hot. Mash it to a puree and keep aside.
  2. Melt the remaining butter to a skillet or pan, saute garlic and onion till golden brown. Add in the tomatoes, carrots and cook in for 5 minutes on medium high flame.
  3. Add the spice powders and cook till raw smell fades away. Gradually add the lamb stock and mix well.
  4. Add in the minced lamb, parsley leaves and cook till it reaches a thick consistency. Add salt if needed.
  5. Preheat oven at 200 degree. In the baking dish, layer the entire meat mix by leveling it. Now sprinkle enough cheddar cheese and mozzarella cheese. Cover it by layering with the potato mash. Make swirls or lines using a fork for decoration.
  6. Take milk and egg white to a bowl and mix well until combined. Now grease this mixture above the potato mash using a brush for a good glaze texture.
  7. Bake the pie for 25 to 30 mins or until potato mash turns golden color. Serve hot.
